For many expat children, moving to the Netherlands can feel incredibly overwhelming. A new school, a different language, and unfamiliar children can make a child feel insecure or lonely in the beginning.
At Dutch for Kids, we regularly receive messages from parents who notice that their child is struggling to connect with classmates at school.
Questions like:
“Can we start Dutch lessons quickly? My child is having trouble making friends.”
And we completely understand that. Because language plays such an important role in connecting with other children.
Thankfully, after more than 13 years of teaching, we continue to see how quickly children blossom with the right support.
Online Dutch lessons for children focused on real life
At Dutch for Kids, we do not offer a standard Dutch language course for children.
Instead, we focus on real-life situations children experience every day:
- chatting on the playground
- participating during PE lessons
- working together in class
- playing with other children
- having conversations with classmates
During our online Dutch lessons for children, we spend a lot of time practicing speaking and listening. This helps children expand their vocabulary in a calm and natural way.
And the more words a child knows, the easier it becomes to connect with others and make friends.
“My daughter was always playing alone…”
Recently, a mother contacted us. Her family was an expat family from Spain who had just moved to the Netherlands, and their young daughter had started at a Dutch primary school.
Before moving, they had often heard:
“Children will naturally learn the language.”
And yes, that usually does happen. But what many parents sometimes underestimate is how difficult that first period can be.
These parents noticed that their daughter was constantly playing alone in the classroom and on the playground. She struggled to connect with other children and came home from school feeling sad.
The parents became genuinely worried.
That’s when they started our online Dutch lessons for children. Twice a week, she practiced one-on-one with her teacher for thirty minutes.
And it made such a difference.
She could calmly practice:
- new vocabulary
- simple conversations
- asking questions
- responding to other children
- speaking with confidence
And perhaps most importantly: she dared to make mistakes.
Within a short time, her parents saw her completely change. She became happier, talked more, and slowly started connecting with other children.
Honestly, that is one of the most beautiful things for us to see.
Dutch lessons for kids build confidence
Another thing that helps enormously is having a consistent weekly routine.
For example:
“Every Tuesday and Thursday I have online Dutch lessons.”
That structure gives children peace and confidence. They know what to expect and gradually build their language skills step by step.
And that regular practice often helps children progress much faster with learning Dutch.
“It suddenly became a very big step”
Another example is an Indonesian boy who moved from an international school to Year 1 (group 3) at a Dutch primary school.
His parents thought:
“He already speaks quite a bit of Dutch, so this should work.”
But once he arrived in class, the teacher only spoke Dutch. She intentionally did not want to use English.
And for him, that suddenly became a huge step.
He felt insecure, quiet, and sometimes even a little scared. His mother told us:
“We really want him to stay at the Dutch school, but we need to do something. Right now, it’s simply too much all at once.”
That’s when they started our weekly online Dutch lessons.
During the lessons, we calmly reviewed the Year 1 material one-on-one with the teacher and at a much slower pace.
But we did much more than just schoolwork.
We also practiced:
- how to introduce yourself
- how to talk about your hobbies
- how to speak about your favourite animal
- how to start conversations with other children
- how to join group activities
He was so happy and now he’s doing so well. Because that is exactly what helps children tremendously when it comes to making friends.
Dutch lessons for expat children fully adapted to your child
Every child is different. That’s why we completely adapt our lessons to what each child needs.
Some children mainly want to:
- feel more confident speaking
- expand their vocabulary
- practice school language
- improve reading skills
- build self-confidence
Other children especially need calm guidance, structure, and personal attention.
That is exactly why one-on-one online Dutch lessons for children work so well.
At Dutch for Kids, we truly look at the child behind the language question.
Hearing and reading more Dutch helps enormously
Alongside the online Dutch lessons for children, we also give parents practical tips to help their child engage with the language at home.
For example:
- watching Dutch television programmes
- reading Dutch children’s books
- visiting the library together
- listening to audiobooks
- playing Dutch games
The more children are immersed in the Dutch language, the more confident they begin to feel.
Making mistakes is allowed during our Dutch lessons for children
Many children already understand quite a lot of Dutch, but still feel nervous about speaking.
Afraid of making mistakes.
Afraid of being laughed at.
Afraid of saying something wrong.
That’s why we create a safe environment during our Dutch lessons for kids where children feel comfortable practicing.
At Dutch for Kids, our teachers are incredibly proud whenever a child dares to speak.
And often, parents quickly notice a difference:
- more self-confidence
- talking more in class
- more interaction with other children
- making friends more easily
- feeling happier at school
Dutch lessons for children are about so much more than language
After 13 years of experience, we continue to see it happen again and again: children who were once quiet and insecure suddenly begin talking, laughing, and playing with other children.
Because language is ultimately about so much more than simply learning words.
It’s about:
- belonging
- connecting with others
- building confidence
- daring to be yourself
And that is exactly why our online Dutch lessons for children are about so much more than just learning a language.
