How long does it take for a child to become fluent in Dutch?

“Anouk, can you estimate how long it will take before my child speaks Dutch?” I get this question almost weekly from parents who are about to start Dutch lessons with Dutch for Kids. And honestly—it’s a very logical question.

Parents want to know what to expect and where they stand.

The short answer?

It differs from child to child.

To give parents a realistic estimate, I generally divide our students into three groups. Not only the number of lessons matters, but also how much you support language development at home with activities and how much attention is given to speaking skills.

Group 1: Children who are starting from scratch

These are children who speak (almost) no Dutch at home.
For example, because parents come from India, the United States, or another country and speak their own native language at home.

What can you expect?

With 1 Dutch lesson per week:

• after about 1 year: your child can hold simple conversations
• after about 2 years: your child can generally keep up well at a Dutch primary school

This is an average—some children progress faster, others a bit more gradually.

If your child follows multiple lessons per week, progress naturally goes faster.
With 3 lessons per week, some children are already able to hold basic conversations after just 3 months.

How to stimulate language development at home

What you do outside the lessons truly makes a big difference:

• playing Dutch games together
• occasionally watching a Dutch video (for example on Zapp)
• helping with homework (such as repeating sentences from Diglin)

These children live in the Netherlands or abroad and have:

• one Dutch-speaking parent
• one parent who speaks another language

So there is already some basic knowledge of Dutch, although it is often a bit fragmented.

What do we see in practice?

After a few months of lessons:

• children are often already able to participate well in conversations

We usually no longer work with Diglin, but move straight to materials from the Dutch primary school curriculum.

For example:

• a 12-year-old child may work with Grade 4 material
• but progress through multiple grade levels within one year

Spelling, grammar, and vocabulary often fall into place quite quickly.

Extra tips to speed things up

• hang word cards with new vocabulary around the house
• regularly call or message Dutch grandparents
• arrange playdates with other Dutch-speaking children

These kinds of language-development-stimulating activities can lead to huge leaps forward.

Group 3: Dutch-speaking children living abroad

These are children who:

• speak Dutch well
• and may even have attended a Dutch school for some time

Our approach

At the start, we take a very focused look at:

• where does this child struggle?
• what is needed to get back up to level as quickly as possible?

Speaking skills are usually already strong.
The focus is therefore mainly on:

• reading comprehension
• spelling
• grammar
• vocabulary

We work with our own thematic method, based on the same learning goals as CITO and inspired by methods such as Taal Actief, Spelling in Beeld, and Nieuwsbegrip.

Everything has a clear structure, is well-organised, and enjoyable for children to work with.

How quickly are they back on level?

• Often within 3 to 6 months
• After that, parents decide together with us whether to:
  • continue lessons to maintain the level
  • or stop because the goal has been reached

Everything is always done in close consultation.

Every child is different, but with the right guidance—and attention to speaking skills and language-development-stimulating activities at home—an incredible amount of progress can happen in a short time.
