Parents sometimes ask me, “Can my child just take Dutch lessons with Dutch for Kids and do homeschooling besides it?” Well, that really depends on where you’re moving! In countries like Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, homeschooling is an option, but it comes with strict rules. You have to register, prove that your child is learning, and, well, it’s not always the easiest route.
International School
We find that the international school is often the best choice in some cases. For example, if you’re moving to Spain and plan to return after a few years, an international school is fantastic for your children!
Your kids will learn English, pick up some Spanish, and with one Dutch lesson a week at Dutch for Kids, they’ll keep their Dutch language skills sharp. Super handy, because this way they can smoothly reintegrate into the Dutch school system when you return, armed with their report cards from Dutch for Kids that they receive twice a year.
Local School
We often see our expat clients who move to countries like Italy, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Brazil or Japan simply enroll their children in the local school. Especially if you plan to stay permanently or if your partner is from that country, it makes sense for the kids to master the language completely.
And the best part? The children don’t have a complicated language package. For instance, they learn Danish at school, start learning English at a certain grade, and take weekly Dutch lessons with Dutch for Kids. Very straightforward for them!
Asia
In countries like Indonesia (where the local language can be quite challenging), many parents also opt for international schools. This applies to other countries in Asia as well. There, kids learn in English, and with our Dutch lessons, they keep their Dutch skills up to par for when they eventually return to the Netherlands.
