Reading is Fun!

Dutch for Kids lezen is leuk.

We love reading, with and for our students, during our online Dutch lessons. Sometimes we choose a book that we spread out over a few lessons, and other times we read a current text from the news together.

In many daily situations, we encounter words and texts that help us understand the world around us. But what if your child struggles with this or simply doesn’t enjoy it?

We take into account your child’s interests as much as possible to keep them motivated and curious! Do you want to read more with your child before bedtime? Here are 7 motivating tips for reading together with your child.

Here are 7 reading tips to keep your child motivated while reading Dutch books, stories, or texts:

  1. Let your children choose a book themselves. Go to the library or bookstore together and take your time. Make it a fun outing. Don’t focus too much on the book’s level. Enjoyment of reading comes first. You can also choose a comic book, a joke book, or a magazine.
  2. Choose a fixed time of day to read together. Let your child help decide on that time. This way, your child knows when you’ll sit down together. Make it cozy. Sit your child on your lap or sit next to each other on the couch.
  3. Agree on how long you’ll read together.
  4. Take turns reading a sentence or a page. Place a piece of paper or ruler under the line being read.
  5. Finish by reading the rest of the chapter or story aloud. Children love being read to. This way, they can immerse themselves in the story.
  6. Involve your child in your own daily reading activities. Show them that you’re reading a book, magazine, newspaper, recipe, or advertisement. Explain what value it has for you: you’ve learned something, you know there’s a great deal somewhere, or you know which delicious recipe you want to try tomorrow.
  7. Make a deal with your child that they can go to bed fifteen minutes later if they spend that extra fifteen minutes reading. Let your child decide what to read during that time.

Happy reading :)!
